What is NAIDOC Week?

What is NAIDOC Week?

NAIDOC Week is an annual event organized by the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, from which the week gets its name. Back in the 1920s, NAIDOC was formed as a reaction to the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Islander people, a cause which is still sadly ongoing one hundred years later. At present, this is a week in which the history, culture and achievements of the Indigenous people of Australia are recognised and celebrated, as well as an opportunity to discuss the issues which continue to affect the original inhabitants of this land.

For Our Elders BW Tribal

This year, like years before, there is a chosen theme, a focus for the discussions and activities which take place during the week of celebrations. The theme for 2023 is ‘For Our Elders’, a dedication to those wise and caring Indigenous individuals who came before us and who continue to share their stories and knowledge with us today, keeping the culture of the First Nations alive. At a time when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is rapidly being lost to modernity, this theme could not be more relevant. It has never been more important to seek out the remaining keepers of Indigenous knowledge and connect them to both the younger generations and to wider Australian society.

One simple and effective way to celebrate NAIDOC 2023, no matter who or where you are, is through clothing - such as the products provided by our 100% Indigenous-owned company. By proudly displaying the traditional artwork of the First Nations on your work attire, you can create awareness and spread appreciation of the rich culture which has existed in this country since ancient times.
